Clifton was called Clistone in the Domesday Book, referring to its position on a steep hillside - Avon Gorge. Having grown in affluence due to the tobacco industry and slavery, in Georgian times it was merged into Bristol. Clifton's best-known landmark is Clifton Suspension Bridge. Designed by Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was dogged by funding problems, and wasn't completed until after Brunel's death. It is funded entirely by tolls, and is Grade 1 listed.
